Some Organizational Accomplishments From the Past Year The co-chairs are responsible for arranging and chairing the bi-monthly Board meetings, as well as meeting regularly with the Organizer and other staff members to supervise their work.

One important item of business at this first Board meeting is to elect two co-chairs from among the Board members, as well as a Treasurer. Together, we take stock of MCFR’s progress and challenges over the last year, before making goals for what we want to accomplish as a Board in the coming year. The retreat is an opportunity for the new Board members to get to know each other, as well as our staff Organizer. In June 2020, we kicked off the new Board term with our first-ever virtual Board retreat-the first of many online meetings. You can read about the current Board members here. Each spring, the members of MCFR elect a group of nine MCFR members to serve one-year Board terms. That means that the Board is responsible for hiring and supervising staff, overseeing the organization’s finances, and assisting with fundraising. The Board of Directors is the leadership and oversight body of Motor City Freedom Riders. A working group has been working on this platform for a bit over a month now, and now we need your input! What are the most important changes to transit that the Mayor and City Council could make? Fill out our survey and bring your ideas! In addition to kicking off our board elections, we’ll also be discussing our transit justice platform for the City of Detroit, that we’ll be seeking to hold candidates to in this year’s municipal elections. Read about what our board has done over the last year in this blog post, and if you have any questions about being a board member, please reach out and we’d be happy to chat! To run as a candidate, simply send a brief statement (200 words or less) introducing yourself and explaining your interest, along with a picture of yourself, to by May 1st. Board members have an additional meeting every two months, with a few hours per month of tasks in-between. Everyone who is interested in getting more involved in building the movement for transit justice is encouraged to put their names forward-you just need to be a member up to date on your dues. The Motor City Freedom Riders are a democratic organization, where the leadership overseeing our finances and staff are directly elected from among the members themselves.

On Saturday, May 1, at 12:00 pm, we will be holding our Spring General Assembly-a meeting of our whole membership to make some major decisions about our transit justice campaigns and elect our Board of Directors for the coming year.
